QUESTION:

Why does the dialer say the modem is not responding?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION(S):

The following can cause your modem to be unresponsive:

  • bad modem drivers: Find out what type of modem you have. Contact your computer or modem manufacturer for the lastest drivers.
  • incorrect COM port:
    1. Click on Start.
    2. Click on Settings.
    3. Click on Control Panel.
    4. Click on Modems.
    5. Click on the Advanced tab.
    6. Change the COM port if necessary.
  • dead modem: The modem must be replaced. See our modem information.
  • fax software: Try disabling fax software.
  • answering machine: Make sure the answering machine is connected AFTER the modem.
  • software in use: Try disabling the software it says is using the COM port.
  • mouse on same port: Change port on modem. (This ONLY applies to serial mice, NOT PS/2!)
  • Serial port in BIOS is enabled with same port and interrupt settings as internal modem: Change modem to non-conflicting port.
Lightning damaged modems are VERY common after a storm. If NOTHING has changed, but there has been a recent storm - the modem is probably dead. A surge protector or even unplugging the computer from the wall outlet will not protect agaist lightning or surges through the phone line. There are surge protectors available with phone jacks so you can attempt to protect your machine from surge damage.
